釋昭慧法師,1957年出生於緬甸仰光,後移居台灣,師承印順導師,是佛教界少見結合學術、修行與社會行動的女性法師。

他長期關注性別平等與人權議題,不僅爭取比丘尼平等地位、推動廢除「八敬法」,更是台灣首位公開支持並主持同志婚禮的宗教領袖。他堅信慈悲應超越性別與性傾向,信仰不應成為壓迫的工具。

釋昭慧用佛教語言講述人權,用宗教影響力推動社會更包容的方向。她的身影,是宗教與人權交會處的一盞明燈,也提醒大眾,信仰與自由從不衝突,真正的修行,是與眾生同行。


 

Profile

Shi Zhaohui, born in 1957 in Yangon, Myanmar, later moved to Taiwan and studied under Master Yin Shun. She is a rare figure in the Buddhist community, combining academic scholarship, spiritual practice, and social activism as a female monastic.

Shi Zhaohui has long advocated for gender equality and human rights. She fought for equal status for bhikkhunis, promoted the abolition of the “Eight Respectful Rules,” and became Taiwan’s first religious leader to openly support and officiate same-sex weddings. She firmly believes that compassion transcends gender and sexual orientation, and that faith should never be used as a tool of oppression.

Through Buddhist teachings, Shi Zhaohui communicates human rights principles and leverages her religious influence to promote a more inclusive society. She stands as a guiding light at the intersection of religion and human rights, reminding the public that faith and freedom are never in conflict, and that true spiritual practice is walking alongside all sentient beings.
